| Even a stormy Gulf Coast day has its own kind of drama — and the perfect excuse to explore everything Treasure Island has to offer beyond the beach. |
Treasure Island is known for its beautiful beaches and sunny weather, but even paradise gets a rainy day now and then. Don't let a little weather put a damper on your vacation — there's plenty to do! Here at Funshine Getaway, our guests are always asking for local tips, so we put together this updated guide to the best rainy day activities in and around Treasure Island.
1. Atomic Claw Arcade — A Must-Visit Right Here on Treasure Island!
This one is brand new and already one of our absolute favorite recommendations. Atomic Claw Arcade at 245 107th Ave is Tampa Bay's first Japanese-style "clawcade" — and it is every bit as fun as it sounds. With over 60 claw machines packed with plushies, toys, and themed prizes (Pokemon, Naruto, Disney, Nintendo and more), it's wildly entertaining for kids and adults alike. Unlike the infuriating old-school claw machines designed to take your money, these are actually built to help you win — the owner even hands out bags because you're going to need them. Plays start at just $1–$2. It's the perfect rainy afternoon activity, just minutes from our Funshine properties.
2. Intense Escape — Treasure Island's Escape Room
Right on Gulf Blvd at 10681 Gulf Boulevard (above the Chase Bank), Intense Escape offers some of the most thrilling escape room experiences on the Gulf Coast. With multiple rooms ranging from family-friendly adventures to genuinely terrifying challenges, there's something for every group. Their rooms have earned TripAdvisor accolades for multiple consecutive years, so you know they deliver. A rainy afternoon + a 60-minute adrenaline rush = a vacation memory you won't forget. Book in advance as walk-ins aren't always available.
3. Sandbox VR — Full-Body Virtual Reality in St. Pete
If you've never done full-body virtual reality, you are in for something truly mind-blowing — and St. Petersburg is now home to Florida's very first Sandbox VR location at 2228 Central Ave in the Grand Central District. This isn't your typical VR headset experience. You're kitted out with a haptic vest, wrist and ankle motion sensors, and a cutting-edge headset, then set loose in a private "holodeck" with up to five friends to battle zombies, fight pirates, explore alien worlds, or compete in Squid Game-inspired challenges. Every session ends with a personalized highlight video — basically a movie trailer of your group's adventure — which makes for an incredible vacation memory. We've been twice with friends and would go again in a heartbeat. Fair warning: it's basically a workout. Sessions run about 30 minutes and prices range from $35–$60 per person depending on day and time. Book in advance — it fills up fast, especially on rainy weekends. Great for older kids and teens too!
4. Explore John's Pass Village & Boardwalk
Just a short drive up the road in Madeira Beach, John's Pass Village & Boardwalk is a wonderfully charming waterfront hub of shops, restaurants, and live entertainment. The covered boardwalk means you can wander, eat, and shop even in the rain without getting soaked. It's a perennial favorite of our Funshine guests — easy, fun, and very Florida.
5. Pamper Yourself at Radiant Massage Spa
This one is a personal recommendation from your host — I go here myself and I think they're absolutely amazing. Radiant Massage Spa in St. Petersburg's Skyway Marina District offers massages, facials, and a full range of spa services delivered by genuinely talented therapists in a beautiful, calming atmosphere. With over 16 years of experience and glowing five-star reviews, this is the real deal. A rainy day is the universe's way of telling you to book a massage. Listen to the universe.
6. Visit the Dali Museum
A short drive to downtown St. Petersburg brings you to one of the most unique museums in the entire country. The Dalí Museum houses one of the largest collections of Salvador Dalí's work outside of Europe — paintings, sculptures, photographs, and more — all inside a stunning building that's an attraction in itself. Plan to spend a few hours here; it's endlessly fascinating for adults and older kids alike.
7. St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts
Also in downtown St. Pete, the Museum of Fine Arts boasts an impressive collection spanning ancient times through modern day. It frequently hosts special exhibitions, so there's always something new to discover. Pair it with lunch or dinner in downtown St. Pete's incredible restaurant scene for a full day out.
8. Relax at a Local Café
There's nothing cozier than a hot drink and a good book while the rain falls outside. Treasure Island has some lovely spots for exactly this — try Foxy's Café for a laid-back vibe or the Floridian Social Club for something a bit more eclectic. A slow morning at a café is an underrated vacation pleasure.
9. Visit the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum
Located in nearby St. Pete Beach, the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum offers a fascinating look at the area's heritage — from early settlers to the great tourism boom that shaped these barrier islands. It's a lovely, unhurried way to spend a couple of hours and you'll leave knowing your destination a little more deeply.
10. Catch a Movie
Sometimes a rainy day just calls for a big tub of popcorn and a blockbuster. Regal Park Place & RPX in Pinellas Park is just a short drive away with comfortable seating and all the latest films. Simple, reliable, and always a good call.
11. High Tea at The Chattaway
For something a little special, treat yourself to high tea at The Chattaway in St. Pete — a quirky, beloved local institution with a wonderfully eccentric garden atmosphere. Think fine teas, finger sandwiches, scones, and pastries in a setting that feels like stepping into another world. It's a lovely option for a girls' trip, a date, or anyone who appreciates a little elegance mid-vacation.
12. The Capybara Café — St. Pete's Most Unique Experience
This one is brand new to St. Petersburg and already creating quite a buzz — and yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. The Capybara Café at 4703 Park Street N. in St. Pete lets you spend 25 minutes up close with the world's largest (and gentlest) rodents — the internet-famous capybara! But it doesn't stop there. Choose from a variety of encounters including the Lemur Lounge, Mini Safari (wallaby, coatimundi & armadillo), and the After Dark experience featuring fennec foxes, skunks and ringtail cats. All experiences are guided, educational, and designed with animal welfare first — the animals are never forced to interact and always have the freedom to step away. Run by Noah's Ark Sanctuary, every visit directly supports animal rescue and conservation. A rainy day just became the best day of the trip. Book in advance — sessions fill up fast! 📞 (727) 430-4135
But What About the Kids?
Traveling with little ones? No worries — there's plenty to keep them happy too.
Great Explorations Children's Museum
Located in St. Petersburg, Great Explorations Children's Museum is packed with interactive, hands-on exhibits designed to spark curiosity and creativity. It's a fantastic way for kids to learn and play while staying dry.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium
Home to Winter the dolphin from the movie Dolphin Tale, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is both educational and genuinely moving. Kids can see rescued marine animals up close and learn about conservation in an engaging, hands-on environment.
Sky Zone or Altitude Trampoline Park
If you need to burn off some kid energy on a rainy day, a trampoline park is your answer. Sky Zone in Largo and Altitude Trampoline Park in Largo both offer trampolines, foam pits, dodgeball, and plenty of chaos — in the best possible way.
Pottery Painting at Practically Pikasso
Practically Pikasso in St. Petersburg lets kids (and adults!) choose a pottery piece and paint it to take home as a one-of-a-kind vacation souvenir. It's creative, calm, and surprisingly satisfying for all ages.
Indoor Rock Climbing at Vertical Ventures
For older kids and teens, Vertical Ventures in St. Petersburg offers climbing walls at a range of difficulty levels — a great challenge and a great workout all in one.
Go to the Library
Don't overlook the local library! The St. Petersburg Library system has wonderful children's sections with books, games, storytime, and programs. It's a quiet, cozy, free option that younger kids often love.
