| No crowds, no rough surf, just wide open white sand and that gorgeous Gulf water. Little legs were made for beaches like this. 🌊 |
Traveling with little ones takes a special kind of planning — you need enough variety to keep everyone happy, enough downtime to avoid meltdowns, and ideally a mix of free and paid activities so you don't come home broke. The good news? Treasure Island and the surrounding Gulf Coast area is genuinely one of the best destinations in Florida for families with young children. The beach is calm and shallow, the area is walkable, and there is no shortage of things to see, do, and explore. Here's our local guide to making the most of your family vacation with the little ones in tow!
🏖️ Start With the Beach — Nature's Best Playground
Let's be honest — for little kids, the beach itself is often the highlight of the whole trip. And Treasure Island's Gulf beaches are absolutely perfect for young children. The water is calm, warm, and shallow — nothing like the rough Atlantic surf. Little ones can wade, splash, and play in the waves without parents having a heart attack. The wide, flat sandy shoreline is ideal for building sandcastles, collecting shells, and just running around like maniacs in the best possible way. 🌊
Guests at Funshine Pointe Capri and Funshine Sunset Beach are just steps from the Gulf — beach wagons and gear are included so you can load up the kids and everything they need without any hassle. Morning beach time before the heat of the day is always a great call with little ones!
🛝 Glazer Family Playground at the St. Pete Pier
📍 St. Pete Pier, Downtown St. Petersburg | stpetepier.org
This is one of the best free playgrounds in the entire Tampa Bay area — and the setting makes it even more special. The nautical-themed Glazer Family Playground was designed by one of North America's premier playground designers and features an expansive, colorful wonderland of slides, swings, climbing structures, kiddie obstacle courses, and activity nodes. Right next door is the Majeed Foundation Splash Pad — perfect for cooling off on a warm Florida day. And since it's at the St. Pete Pier, you can combine it with lunch, a stroll along the waterfront, and all the other great things the Pier has to offer. Free to visit and completely worth the 25-minute drive from Treasure Island! 🛝💦
🌳 Rosselli Park — Treasure Island
📍 Treasure Island | About 0.6 miles from Funshine Pointe Capri
A lovely local park that's an easy walk from Funshine Pointe Capri — just 0.6 miles over the bridge, perfect for a morning or evening stroll with the kids. Rosselli Park has swings, a sandy play area, and plenty of shady trees to keep little ones cool while they play. A great option when you need to burn off some energy without going far. Locals love it and it's completely free! 🌳
🏴☠️ Pirate Boat Tour — John's Pass
📍 John's Pass Village, Madeira Beach | About 10 minutes from Treasure Island
This is one of my all-time top recommendations for families with young kids — and I say that from personal experience. I took my son on the Royal Ship Conquest out of John's Pass when he was 7 years old and he still talks about it. Swashbuckling activities, costumes, pirate games, and plenty of on-deck fun keep little ones completely entertained the whole time. Parents love the stunning Gulf views and the complimentary beer and wine — because parents need a little adventure too! 🍷⚓
🦘 The Capybara Café — St. Pete
📍 4703 Park Street N, St. Petersburg | capybaracafestpete.com | 📞 (727) 430-4135
The internet's favorite animal — up close and in person! The Capybara Café offers 25-minute guided encounters with capybaras, lemurs, wallabies, fennec foxes, armadillos, skunks and more. Every experience is expertly guided and designed around the animals' comfort — this is genuine wildlife connection, not a petting zoo. Run by Noah's Ark Sanctuary, every visit supports animal rescue and conservation. Little kids absolutely lose their minds here in the best possible way. Book well in advance — it fills up fast! 🦔
🎨 Practically Pikasso — Pottery Painting
📍 St. Petersburg | practicallypikasso.com
Choose a pottery piece, paint it, and take home a one-of-a-kind vacation souvenir that little ones will be so proud of. Practically Pikasso is creative, calm, and surprisingly satisfying for all ages — perfect for a rainy day or a quieter afternoon activity. Kids love having something handmade to show off when they get home! 🎨
🛝 Sky Zone & Altitude Trampoline Park — Largo
Two trampoline parks just a short drive away in Largo — Sky Zone and Altitude Trampoline Park both offer trampolines, foam pits, dodgeball, and plenty of gloriously exhausting fun. Perfect for burning off that seemingly endless kid energy — and wearing them out enough for a nice long nap afterward. Parents, you're welcome. 😄🛝
🌊 The Giant "Hippo" Waterslide — Treasure Island Beach
📍 10400 Gulf Blvd, Treasure Island | treasureislandwaterslide.com
A four-story inflatable waterslide right on the sand — open daily 9am–5pm, weather permitting. Yes it's for kids AND adults, and yes it's exactly as fun as it sounds. Combine it with a beach day, rent a cabana, and make a full day of it! 🌊🛝
🏛️ Great Explorations Children's Museum — St. Pete
📍 St. Petersburg | greatex.org
Packed with interactive, hands-on exhibits designed to spark curiosity and creativity in young minds. Great Explorations is a fantastic rainy day option — or honestly any day when you want the kids to learn and play in an engaging, air-conditioned environment. A St. Pete staple for families! 🔬
🐬 Day Trip: Florida Aquarium — Tampa
📍 Tampa | flaquarium.org
About 45 minutes from Treasure Island, the Florida Aquarium in Tampa is one of the best aquariums in the Southeast — and honestly even better than the Clearwater Marine Aquarium for little kids. Up-close marine life encounters, interactive exhibits, and a genuine wow factor that kids of all ages respond to. Plan for a full morning or afternoon — there's plenty to see! 🐠🦈
🦒 Day Trip: Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park
📍 Tampa | zootampa.org
Zoo Tampa is a fantastic full-day family adventure about 45 minutes from Treasure Island. I took my son here on a school field trip years ago and we got to feed giraffes — one of those experiences that sticks with a kid forever. 🦒 They've done incredible updates since then and the zoo just keeps getting better. From manatees and Florida wildlife to exotic animals from around the world, Zoo Tampa delivers a genuinely memorable day for the whole family. Budget for a full day — you're going to need it!
🦭 Day Trip: Apollo Beach Manatee Viewing
📍 Apollo Beach, Tampa Electric Manatee Viewing Center | tampaelectric.com/manatees
This is one of my absolute favorite local secrets and little kids absolutely go wild for it. The warm water discharge from the Tampa Electric power plant at Apollo Beach attracts hundreds of manatees — especially on cold days when they huddle together in the warm outflow. Watching these enormous, gentle giants up close from the viewing platform is completely jaw-dropping for kids and adults alike. It's free, it's unlike anything else in Florida, and it's about 45 minutes from Treasure Island. Best visited on a cold day between November and March — mostly closed in summer when manatees disperse. If your visit falls in the cooler months, do not miss this. 🦭
🎠 Day Trip: Glazer Children's Museum — Tampa
📍 Tampa | glazermuseum.org
For younger children especially, the Glazer Children's Museum in downtown Tampa is a wonderful full-day destination. Multiple floors of imaginative, hands-on exhibits designed for little minds — from a kid-sized grocery store to construction zones to science experiments. About 45 minutes from Treasure Island and absolutely worth the drive for families with toddlers and preschoolers. 🎠
