Pack Your Trail Shoes AND Your Beach Towel: The Best State Parks Near Treasure Island, FL

Sunset on Fort De Soto

This post started with a question from a guest staying at Funshine Pointe Capri who wanted to know where to go to experience Florida's natural side beyond the beach. I had so much to share that a quick text wasn't going to cut it — so I wrote it all up, printed it out, and added it to the in-condo guidebook. Now it's here on the blog too, because if one guest was wondering, plenty more probably are! Treasure Island is famous for its gorgeous Gulf beaches — and you could spend your entire vacation with your toes in the sand and leave perfectly happy. But if you're the kind of traveler who loves to explore beyond the shoreline, you are in serious luck. Some of Florida's most beautiful state parks and nature preserves are right in our backyard, and as a local who has spent years exploring them, I can tell you firsthand — they are absolutely worth a detour. Pack your trail shoes AND your beach towel, because some of these parks give you both.

Trouble in Paradise

Our dogs Jazzy & Daxie did not enjoy the storm.

✨ Update, March 2026: We're thrilled to report that both properties are back open and welcoming guests! Funshine Pointe Capri has been fully restored and operating since January 2025. Funshine Sunset Beach is also back — the unit itself is beautifully restored, though the building's pool was lost to Helene and the first floor units are still being rebuilt. Construction on the first floor is nearly complete and we're hopeful everything will be wrapped up by end of May 2026. The beach, the sunsets, and the free parking are all very much intact. 😊 Read on for the story of how we got here.

It’s been a tough few days to be a resident in Florida. We've been watching the devastation unfold before our eyes in person, on TV and the internet, and it's widespread. First, I want to stress that Evan and I are OK, our families are OK, and our pups were oblivious to everything except the lack of air conditioning and the scary winds. Our power came back on at 6 a.m., and the house is finally cooling off. I am so thankful to all the family, friends, and former guests who reached out to check on us, so I wanted to post an update on how things are going with Funshine Properties. Please keep in mind that we don’t know a lot right now, but here’s where we stand as of the morning of September 28th.

Things to Do on a Rainy Day in Treasure Island, FL

Even a stormy Gulf Coast day has its own kind of drama — and the perfect excuse to explore everything Treasure Island has to offer beyond the beach.

Even a stormy Gulf Coast day has its own kind of drama — and the perfect excuse to explore everything Treasure Island has to offer beyond the beach.

Treasure Island is known for its beautiful beaches and sunny weather, but even paradise gets a rainy day now and then. Don't let a little weather put a damper on your vacation — there's plenty to do! Here at Funshine Getaway, our guests are always asking for local tips, so we put together this updated guide to the best rainy day activities in and around Treasure Island.

Active & Fun (Burn Off That Energy)

Atomic Claw Arcade — A Must-Visit Right Here on Treasure Island

This one is brand new and already one of our absolute favorite recommendations. Atomic Claw Arcade at 245 107th Ave is Tampa Bay's first Japanese-style "clawcade" — and it is every bit as fun as it sounds. With over 60 claw machines packed with plushies, toys, and themed prizes (Pokémon, Naruto, Disney, Nintendo and more), it's wildly entertaining for kids and adults alike. Unlike the infuriating old-school claw machines designed to take your money, these are actually built to help you win — the owner even hands out bags because you're going to need them. Plays start at just $1–$2. It's the perfect rainy afternoon activity, just minutes from our Funshine properties.

Intense Escape — Treasure Island's Escape Room

Right on Gulf Blvd at 10681 Gulf Boulevard (above the Chase Bank), Intense Escape offers some of the most thrilling escape room experiences on the Gulf Coast. With multiple rooms ranging from family-friendly adventures to genuinely terrifying challenges, there's something for every group. Their rooms have earned TripAdvisor accolades for multiple consecutive years, so you know they deliver. A rainy afternoon + a 60-minute adrenaline rush = a vacation memory you won't forget. Book in advance as walk-ins aren't always available.

Sandbox VR — Full-Body Virtual Reality in St. Pete

If you've never done full-body virtual reality, you are in for something truly mind-blowing — and St. Petersburg is now home to Florida's very first Sandbox VR location at 2228 Central Ave in the Grand Central District. This isn't your typical VR headset experience. You're kitted out with a haptic vest, wrist and ankle motion sensors, and a cutting-edge headset, then set loose in a private "holodeck" with up to five friends to battle zombies, fight pirates, explore alien worlds, or compete in Squid Game-inspired challenges. Every session ends with a personalized highlight video — basically a movie trailer of your group's adventure — which makes for an incredible vacation memory. We've been twice with friends and would go again in a heartbeat. Fair warning: it's basically a workout. Sessions run about 30 minutes and prices range from $35–$60 per person depending on day and time. Book in advance — it fills up fast, especially on rainy weekends. Great for older kids and teens too!

Sky Zone or Altitude Trampoline Park

If you need to burn off some energy on a rainy day, a trampoline park is your answer. Sky Zone Clearwater and Altitude Trampoline Park in Largo both offer trampolines, foam pits, dodgeball, and plenty of chaos — in the best possible way.

Indoor Rock Climbing at Vertical Ventures

For older kids and teens, Vertical Ventures in St. Petersburg offers climbing walls at a range of difficulty levels — a great challenge and a great workout all in one.

Bowling at Pasadena Bowl

Sometimes you just need to knock down some pins. Pasadena Bowl is just a short drive away and perfect for a fun, low-key rainy day. Whether you're competitive or just looking to laugh with friends, bowling never gets old.

Entertainment (Movies, Shows & Theater)

Sundial AMC + Dinner

Classic rainy day move — grab some popcorn and lose yourself in a movie at AMC Sundial 12. Afterward, head to dinner at Ruth Chris for a classic steakhouse experience, or try Forbici, the hot new spot with killer cocktails.

Regal Park Place — Movie Theater & Shopping Combo

For a rainy day double feature, Regal Park Place & RPX offers movies plus Tyrone Square Mall right next door. Catch a film, then wander the mall for browsing and dining — it's an easy combo that keeps you entertained and dry the whole time.

Greenlight St. Pete — Art House Cinema

For something a little different, check out Greenlight St. Pete, an art house cinema showcasing independent films, classics, and documentaries. It's the kind of place where movie lovers gather — perfect for a thoughtful, rainy afternoon. Limited showtimes, so check ahead.

The Beach Theatre — Historic Movie Theater on Corey Avenue

Catch a flick at St. Pete Beach's charming historic movie theater, The Beach Theatre. Limited showtimes, but genuinely worth planning around if something catches your eye. There's something magical about watching a film in a theater with history.

Shopping & Wandering

Corey Avenue — Where the Locals Hang

Skip the touristy vibes and spend time where locals actually do. Corey Avenue on St. Pete Beach has everything — vintage shops, local boutiques, amazing restaurants, and bars that actually have a soul. Wander the shops, grab lunch or dinner, then settle into The Swigwam — a true local dive with dollar bills from around the world on the walls and grumpy old men nursing beers. Next door, Twisted Tiki has live entertainment most nights, from music bingo to local bands. It's got that authentic Florida beach town feel without the crowds. Want to see what's happening? Check out Corey Avenue's business directory.

Explore John's Pass Village & Boardwalk

Just a short drive up the road in Madeira Beach, John's Pass Village & Boardwalk is a wonderfully charming waterfront hub of shops, restaurants, and live entertainment. The covered boardwalk means you can wander, eat, and shop even in the rain without getting soaked. It's a perennial favorite of our Funshine guests — easy, fun, and very Florida.

Ellenton Premium Outlets

Looking for serious shopping? Ellenton Premium Outlets (about 20 minutes away) is perfect for a rainy afternoon. Over 150 stores with covered walkways mean you can browse comfortably rain or shine — everything from high-end brands to athletic wear. It's the kind of place you can easily lose an afternoon (and your luggage space). Browse the full directory at Ellenton Premium Outlets.

Pamper Yourself at Radiant Massage Spa

This one is a personal recommendation from your host — I go here myself and I think they're absolutely amazing. Radiant Massage Spa in St. Petersburg's Skyway Marina District offers massages, facials, and a full range of spa services delivered by genuinely talented therapists in a beautiful, calming atmosphere. With over 16 years of experience and glowing five-star reviews, this is the real deal. A rainy day is the universe's way of telling you to book a massage. Listen to the universe.

Food, Drink & Coffee

Relax at a Local Café

There's nothing cozier than a hot drink and a good book while the rain falls outside. Try Foxy's Café for a laid-back vibe or Café Soliel on St. Pete Beach for fresh-made French pastries. A slow morning at a café is an underrated vacation pleasure.

High Tea at The Chattaway

For something a little special, treat yourself to high tea at The Chattaway in St. Pete — a quirky, beloved local institution with a wonderfully eccentric garden atmosphere. Think fine teas, finger sandwiches, scones, and pastries in a setting that feels like stepping into another world. It's a lovely option for a girls' trip, a date, or anyone who appreciates a little elegance mid-vacation.

Grab a Drink & Watch the Water

When the rain gets dramatic, sometimes the best rainy day activity is to grab a cold drink, listen to music, and watch the water from the safety of a bayside bar. The Oystershucker and The Toasted Monkey both offer great views, good drinks, and sports on the TV if you want to catch a game while you wait for the storm to pass.

Culture & Museums

Visit the Dali Museum

A short drive to downtown St. Petersburg brings you to one of the most unique museums in the entire country. The Dalí Museum houses one of the largest collections of Salvador Dalí's work outside of Europe — paintings, sculptures, photographs, and more — all inside a stunning building that's an attraction in itself. Plan to spend a few hours here; it's endlessly fascinating for adults and older kids alike.

St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts

Also in downtown St. Pete, the Museum of Fine Arts boasts an impressive collection spanning ancient times through modern day. It frequently hosts special exhibitions, so there's always something new to discover. Pair it with lunch or dinner in downtown St. Pete's incredible restaurant scene for a full day out.

Gulf Beaches Historical Museum

Located in nearby St. Pete Beach, the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum offers a fascinating look at the area's heritage — from early settlers to the great tourism boom that shaped these barrier islands. It's a lovely, unhurried way to spend a couple of hours and you'll leave knowing your destination a little more deeply.

Weird & Instagram-Worthy

The Capybara Café — St. Pete's Most Unique Experience

This one is brand new to St. Petersburg and already creating quite a buzz — and yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. The Capybara Café at 4703 Park Street N. in St. Pete lets you spend 25 minutes up close with the world's largest (and gentlest) rodents — the internet-famous capybara! But it doesn't stop there. Choose from a variety of encounters including the Lemur Lounge, Mini Safari (wallaby, coatimundi & armadillo), and the After Dark experience featuring fennec foxes, skunks and ringtail cats. All experiences are guided, educational, and designed with animal welfare first — the animals are never forced to interact and always have the freedom to step away. Run by Noah's Ark Sanctuary, every visit directly supports animal rescue and conservation. A rainy day just became the best day of the trip. Book in advance — sessions fill up fast! 📞 (727) 430-4135

Museum of the Unknown

St. Pete Beach just got weirder (in the best way). The Museum of the Unknown is quirky, fun, and totally Instagram-worthy. It's the kind of place that makes for great vacation stories and even better photos.

Floridarama

For fun, kitschy Floridiana vibes and genuinely cool vintage finds, Floridarama is the spot. With ever-changing exhibits and scavenger hunts to discover, it's Instagram gold and a perfect rainy-day rabbit hole.

But What About the Kids?

Traveling with little ones? No worries — there's plenty to keep them happy too.

Treasure Island Fun Center

Don't overlook this local favorite — it's moved to Seminole (7770 Seminole Blvd) but it's just a short drive across the Intracoastal from Treasure Island. A classic arcade packed with games for all ages, hot food on site, and guests consistently rave about the reasonable prices, clean facilities, and friendly staff. 4.4 stars across nearly 1,800 Google reviews — this one delivers. Perfect for families looking to burn a rainy afternoon without breaking the bank. 🎮

Great Explorations Children's Museum

Located in St. Petersburg, Great Explorations Children's Museum is packed with interactive, hands-on exhibits designed to spark curiosity and creativity. It's a fantastic way for kids to learn and play while staying dry.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Home to Winter the dolphin from the movie Dolphin Tale, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is both educational and genuinely moving. Kids can see rescued marine animals up close and learn about conservation in an engaging, hands-on environment.

Pottery Painting at Practically Pikasso

Practically Pikasso in St. Petersburg lets kids (and adults!) choose a pottery piece and paint it to take home as a one-of-a-kind vacation souvenir. It's creative, calm, and surprisingly satisfying for all ages.

Visit the Library

Don't overlook the local library! The St. Petersburg Library system has wonderful children's sections with books, games, storytime, and programs. It's a quiet, cozy, free option that younger kids often love.
